When James was 8 years old, his father, James, died. Soon after, his
mother emigrated to America with her family and located in Harrison Co., Ohio
where they remained for 3 years and then came to Delaware Co., Ohio. This
would have been about 1828. James was brought up on a farm and received a
good common school education. James owned 320 acres of land. (1)
