50 YEARS AGO - OSTRANDER MEN
AND BOYS WHO HAVE MADE THEIR MARKS IN THE WORLD SINCE 1850 - A STORY
OF PUSH, ENTERPRISE AND THRIFT
"The following sketches were written for the Gazette several
years ago by Mr. J. M. Roney, and are republished by request; About
the year 1850 a gang of men were seen dodging through the thick
woods, where the now beautiful village of Ostrander is
located. They are slashing down bushes, sighting from tree to
tree and carrying chain and compass. It soon developed that
they were surveyors, sent out to find the most practicable route for
a railroad from Springfield to Pittsburgh, Pa. by Mount Vernon,
Ohio. The line was finally located where the track now lays;
and called the Springfield, Mt. Vernon & Pittsburgh
Railroad. The construction of the road was soon commenced, the
timber cut, the stumps grubbed out (some of which took two yoke of
oxen to roll off the proposed path). Maloney and McMillan were
the contractors that built the road. The engineer was a
gentlemen named Ostrander, for whom the village was named. It
wasn't Jake O. Stranger, as some suppose. Our object in
writing this history is to keep in memory the boys and men who have
been connected with his R.R. in this vicinity, most of whom have
made a success in life, and now, if not dead, are occupying
positions of responsibility." |

age; yet its defintely the same Jacob Ostrander.
Although Jacob's parents are listed, no one has been able to
link him with any other Ostrander family and/or found any
record of the names provided here that he listed as his
parients himself in a response to the Ostrander family
genealogist. The names given are those provided by
